Understanding the Berlin Wall is a unique, pocket-sized guide, essential for understanding the mechanism of the Cold War's most emblematic structure. It contains some of the most detailed maps of the 160 km of the Wall, now accessible to the general public. The plan allows you to visit any point of the former route and compare its current appearance to how it looked when it completely surrounded West Berlin, dividing communities and separating friends and families; another section offers a tour of the entire route, across more than 50 sites where remnants of the Wall and other historical fortifications are still visible. Understanding the Berlin Wall is packed with stunning 3D infographics, a timeline, and illustrated tables that explain at a glance the different phases of the Wall's construction, the procedure at each border crossing in the city, as well as hard-to-find statistics on escape victims, tunnel routes, and much more. Understanding the Berlin Wall was written and designed by Jan Schwochow, one of Germany's most renowned visual journalists and author of numerous infographic books, including The World Explained, published by Prestel. Like Understanding the Berlin Wall, these books present complex information in a more accessible way.
